Rolex Submariner 5513 Gilt Dial

This Submariner has been nicknamed Maggy’s Gift here at Bulang and Sons, thanks to the cool personal engraving on the case back. These early black dialed watches from Rolex feature, what collectors refer to as gilt dials. The text and outer minute markers on these dials are a gold hue – hence the term gilt. The colour is actually the brass dial base showing through, as the dials were printed with the text ‘in relief’.

The case is still strong all round, with good even lugs and crown guards. The case back features a light engraving: “With Love Maggy X’mas 1965”. It could easily be polished out, but why would you?! The dial is, we believe, in fantastic condition with all-original gloss with cool banana yellow-coloured hour makers. The lume plots are the correct zinc sulphide and have a short green glow after UV exposure. The super nice fat font insert has aged to an almost anthracite hue and it retains its original lume pearl. The rivet link Oyster bracelet, reference 7206, is in great condition with a clasp stamped ‘3 64’ and 80 endlinks. The watch has been fully checked and regulated by our watchmaker.
